Lower Berth Quota in Trains: Rules, Eligibility and Per Coach Numbers (2026) Indian Railways reserves a set of lower berths in every eligible train for those who need them most: senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, and pregnant women. This is called the Lower Berth Quota (also shown as the Senior Citizen quota). Who is Eligible for the Lower Berth Quota? Male senior citizens aged 60 years and above. Female passengers aged 45 years and above. Pregnant women (booking under this quota for a pregnant woman travelling alone is done at the railway counter or reservation office). The quota applies when such a passenger is travelling alone, or when two eligible passengers travel on one ticket. The berths are earmarked in Sleeper, AC 3 tier (3AC) and AC 2 tier (2AC) classes in Mail, Express, Rajdhani, Duronto and other fully AC trains. Getting a Lower Berth After Boarding There is also an on-board rule that helps a lot. After the train departs, if any lower berths are vacant, the ticket checking staff (TTE) can allot a vacant lower berth to an eligible passenger who was given an upper or middle berth, that is, a senior citizen, a person with disability travelling on a disability concession, or a pregnant woman.
