Beyond two breaks, the rules allow no more on a single ticket. How to Break Your Journey Get down at your chosen station, making sure you have already covered 500 km from where you started. Go to the Station Master and ask for your ticket to be endorsed for break of journey. Do this on arrival rather than later. Keep the endorsed ticket safe during your stay. Board a later train within two days and complete the remaining leg on the same ticket. For a reserved berth on the onward leg, pay the applicable reservation charges. Important: The endorsement is not optional. Without it, staff on the onward leg can treat you as travelling without a valid ticket, along with the penalty that follows. So make the endorsement your first task after getting down. Break Journey and E-Tickets This is where most travellers get stuck today. Because the rule requires a Station Master to physically endorse your ticket, the facility fits tickets booked at a PRS counter far better than e-tickets booked on IRCTC. An e-ticket exists as a digital record for a specific train, which leaves no document to endorse in the usual way. Therefore, if you already know you want to halt en route, book at a reservation counter and confirm the position with the clerk while booking. If you hold an e-ticket and your plans change mid-journey, speak to the TTE or the Station Master before you get down, since the alternative may simply be booking a fresh ticket for the remaining leg. Take an example. Someone holding a through ticket from Pune to Jammu Tawi travels up to Mumbai a day earlier so they can catch the Mumbai to Jammu Tawi train the next morning. Because the wait stays under 24 hours, railways treats this as a normal connection rather than a break of journey. Tip: When you plan a connection, leave at least three hours between the two trains. Long-distance trains run late often enough that a tight connection turns risky, particularly during the monsoon or the winter fog season. Check live running status before you set out.
