Break Journey Rules in Indian Railway: Halts, Limits and Endorsement (2026) On a long train journey, you may want to stop somewhere along the way for a day or two before continuing. Indian Railways allows this through its break journey rules, provided your journey is long enough and you follow the correct procedure. What Break Journey Actually Means Break journey means holding one through ticket from your starting station to your destination, then getting down at a station along the route, staying a while, and later boarding another train to complete the same journey on that same ticket. Board a later train within two days and complete the remaining leg on the same ticket. For a reserved berth on the onward leg, pay the applicable reservation charges. Important: The endorsement is not optional. Without it, staff on the onward leg can treat you as travelling without a valid ticket, along with the penalty that follows. Because the rule requires a Station Master to physically endorse your ticket, the facility fits tickets booked at a PRS counter far better than e-tickets booked on IRCTC. Therefore, if you already know you want to halt en route, book at a reservation counter and confirm the position with the clerk while booking. If you hold an e-ticket and your plans change mid-journey, speak to the TTE or the Station Master before you get down, since the alternative may simply be booking a fresh ticket for the remaining leg. Take an example. Someone holding a through ticket from Pune to Jammu Tawi travels up to Mumbai a day earlier so they can catch the Mumbai to Jammu Tawi train the next morning. Because the wait stays under 24 hours, railways treats this as a normal connection rather than a break of journey. Tip: When you plan a connection, leave at least three hours between the two trains.
