India’s First Hydrogen Train
Updated : 14.08.2025
India is getting ready for a big step in green transportation its first hydrogen powered train. This special train will run using hydrogen fuel instead of diesel or electricity. Hydrogen fuel is clean because it produces only water as waste, not smoke or harmful gases.
The first hydrogen train is planned to run on the Jind – Sonipat route in Haryana. It is being developed by Indian Railways to reduce pollution and save fuel costs. These trains will be quieter, faster, and more eco-friendly.
With this project, India will join countries like Germany and China, which already use hydrogen trains. It is an exciting move towards a cleaner future for travel in our country.
Hydrogen Train – Must-Know Facts in Simple Words
- World’s Most Powerful Hydrogen Train
India is building the world’s most powerful and longest hydrogen-powered train.
It can carry up to 2600 passengers at a time. - Strong Engine Power
The train will have a 1200 HP engine, making India a leader in hydrogen train technology. - Successful Testing in Chennai
The first hydrogen train coach was tested at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.
In July, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the trial, calling it a big step for a future-ready and eco-friendly India. - ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ Project
Plan to build 35 hydrogen trains under this scheme.
Each train will cost about ₹80 crore.
Special hill and heritage route facilities will cost around ₹70 crore.
- How the Train is Being Made
A diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) is being modified to run on hydrogen fuel cells.
This is part of a pilot project to test hydrogen-powered trains in India. - Supporting Infrastructure
A full facility will be set up for hydrogen production, storage, and supply to keep the trains running smoothly. - Tower Cars for Maintenance
Indian Railways will also build five hydrogen fuel cell-based tower cars for track and overhead wire maintenance.
Each will cost about ₹10 crore. - First Route – Haryana
The first hydrogen train will run in Haryana.
Hydrogen will be produced using a 1 megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser in Jind.
