Train Fare by Railway
The Ministry of Railways says that long-distance train travel becomes costlier from Friday, December 26, 2025. It also states that Indian Railways has significantly expanded its network and operations over the past decade, reaching even the remotest parts of the country.
The revised train fares will come into effect from December 26, 2025, as part of the Railway Fare Rationalization.
- There will be no change in fares for Suburban single journey tickets.
- There will also be no change in fares for Season Tickets for both suburban and non-suburban services.
- For Ordinary Non-AC (Non-Suburban) services, the basic fare for Second Class Ordinary will increase by 1 paisa per passenger kilometre, subject to distance slabs.
- There will be no increase up to 215 km.
- For distances from 216 km to 750 km, the fare will increase by Rs. 5.
- For distances from 751 km to 1250 km, the increase will be Rs. 10.
- For distances from 1251 km to 1750 km, the increase will be Rs. 15.
- For distances from 1751 km to 2250 km, the increase will be Rs. 20.
- The basic fare for Sleeper Class Ordinary will increase by 1 paisa per passenger kilometre.
- The basic fare for First Class Ordinary will also increase by 1 paisa per passenger kilometre.
- For Mail/Express (Non-AC) trains, the basic fare for Second Class, Sleeper Class and First Class will increase by 2 paisa per passenger kilometre.
- For AC classes, including AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier/3E, AC 2-Tier and AC First Class (EC/EA), the basic fare will increase by 2 paisa per passenger kilometre.

- The existing basic fares of trains such as Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Tejas, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, and Ordinary Non-Suburban services have been revised according to the updated basic fare table.
- There will be no change in charges such as reservation fee and superfast surcharge. These charges will continue to be levied wherever applicable.
- GST, wherever applicable, will continue to be charged as per the instructions issued from time to time.
- The rounding off of fares will continue to be done as per the existing principles.
- All other terms and conditions will remain unchanged as per the instructions issued from time to time.

Under the revised fare structure, passengers travelling up to 500 km in non-AC coaches pay an additional ₹10. Fares for Mail and Express trains in non-AC coaches increase by 2 paise per km, while AC class fares also rise by 2 paise per km. The Ministry says the fare rationalisation is expected to generate around ₹600 crore in additional revenue this year.
- For Ordinary Class (General) passengers travelling up to 215 km, there is no increase in fare.
- For journeys beyond 215 km in Ordinary Class, the fare will increase by 1 paisa per km.
- This means an additional ₹1 for 100 km beyond 215 km and ₹10 for 1,000 km beyond 215 km.
- For Mail/Express Non-AC trains travelling more than 215 km, the fare will increase by 2 paise per km.
- This results in an increase of ₹2 for 100 km beyond 215 km and ₹20 for 1,000 km beyond 215 km.
- For Mail/Express AC class trains travelling more than 215 km, the fare will also increase by 2 paise per km.
- This means an additional ₹2 for 100 km beyond 215 km and ₹20 for 1,000 km beyond 215 km.
- For Suburban and Monthly Season Ticket (MST) passengers, there is no change in fares for any distance.
- Express trains: Minimum fare for short journeys (50 km) increased by ₹5, from ₹30 to ₹35.
- Superfast trains: Minimum fare increased by ₹5, from ₹45 to ₹50.
- Long-distance second-class ordinary tickets (500 km): Fare increased by ₹5.
- Sleeper Class Tickets for short Journey (200 Km) remain unchanged at ₹150.
