Why the Scheme Wound Down

IRCTC and the zonal railways then disagreed over who owned the problem, with IRCTC saying it had handed the machines over and Railways saying it had received nothing in writing. Meanwhile, no fresh tenders went out.

In Mumbai, where dozens of machines stood locked on both Central and Western Railway, authorities eventually decided against reviving them. Passenger groups pushed back, arguing that shutting the machines pushed travellers towards buying bottled water, though the decision stood.

Rail Neer and Packaged Water

Rail Neer is IRCTC’s own packaged drinking water brand and the authorised brand on trains and at stations. Following the GST reduction in September 2025, the fixed rates came down:

Free Water at Stations

On the Train

Pantry car staff and authorised vendors sell packaged water at the fixed rate. In air-conditioned coaches, the attendant can usually tell you when the next stocking happens.
