Here are the details including how to book Advance Reservation of Train Ticket via Ticket Counters.

Passengers can book their ticket for any train on the Indian Railways network, from any originating station to any destination (Reservation can be made subject to distance restrictions and availability of quotas) at any of the Computerised Reservation Centres, across the country. With the network of Passenger Reservation Systems, passenger can book their onward and return journey tickets from any Computerised Reservation Centre nearest to you – not just from major Railway stations. Eastern Railway ~ Extra Booking Window Opened

Eastern Railway announced ( on 25.07.2023) that as an immediate solution to address the challenges experienced by passengers while attempting to book tickets online due to a temporary technical failure of the IRCTC website, Eastern Railway has taken proactive steps. To ensure the convenience of passengers, Eastern Railway has set up additional booking windows at various stations. These Extra Reservation (PRS) Counters have been opened to facilitate easy ticket booking during the period of the IRCTC website glitch. Passengers can now avail themselves of these alternative counters to secure their travel reservations smoothly and without inconvenience

  • Sealdah, Howrah, Kolkata, Barasat, Ranaghat, Asansol, Barddhaman, Bandel, Rampurhat, Jasidih, Malda, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Sahibganj

Central Railway ~ Extra Booking Window Opened

Central Railway announced (on 25.07.2023) that additional 6 PRS ticket counters opened in NAGPUR div, 22 counters working at major stations-

  • Nagpur-2 extra counters (total 7 counters), Wardha- 1 extra (total 3), Ballarshah-1 extra (total 2), Chandrapur-1 extra (total 3), Betul-1 extra (total 3), Ajni-1 extra (total 4).

Northern Railway ~ Extra Booking Window Opened

Northern Railway announced that disruptions of IRCTC e-ticketing service due to technical reasons, additional reservation and current counters have been opened for the convenience of the passengers.

  • Firozpur Division :- Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar City, Janadhar Cantt, Jammu Tawi and SMVD Katra Stations.
  • Delhi Region :- New Delhi: 2 counters, Shahdara: 1 counter, Okhla: 1 counter, Nizamuddin station: 1 counter, Sarojini Nagar: 1 counter, Sabzi Mandi: 1 counter, Delhi Junction: 2 counters, Kirti Nagar: 1 counter, Azadpur: 1 counter

South Central Railway announced that to facilitate passengers for booking reservation tickets more than 50 No’s of additional Booking Counters have been opened across over 40 stations in SCR today.

Computerrised Passenger Reservation Centres in Bengaluru Division will function from 08 am to 06 pm from Monday to Saturday, to comply with the latest restrictions.

These centres are situated in KSR Bengaluru, Cantonment, Yeshwantpur, Krishnarajapuram, Hosur, Tumakuru, Mandya, Yelahanka and Kengeri. On Sundays, due to complete lockdown due to Covid 19 announced by the state government, all reservation centres in the division will remain closed, except for KSR Bengaluru which will function from 8 am to 2 pm.

South Western railway announced that revision in timings was due to the decision by the Government of Karnataka to impose curfew from 8 pm to 5 am on week days and complete lockdown on Sundays.

There will be no change in the working hours of Reservation Centres at Dharmapuri, Sri Sathyasai Prasanthinilayam, Hindupur and Bangarpet which are working in single from 8 am to 2 pm.

Advance Reservation Period

Passenger can reserve the ticket 120 days in advance, excluding the date of journey at the train originating station. At Intermediate stations where the train arrives the following day, reservation can be done more than 120 days in advance. In the case of some intercity day express trains, the Advance Reservation period is less. Special Trains are planned by Railways where ARP varies subject to maximum 120 days. Such Trains may have a higher fare than normal Trains.

Reservation Status

The Reservation status will be clearly indicated in the ticket. If passengers ticket is confirmed, his/her coach and berth numbers will be mentioned on your ticket in all classes other than First Class and AC First Class. For these the word “Confirmed”, will be printed alongside the class of travel. If your ticket is in RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation)/Waitlisted status, the same will be mentioned on the ticket.

Note:- Passengers are requested to kindly note that while every effort will be made ensure a comfortable, hassle - free journey, Indian Railways are not liable to compensate a passenger due to non-provision of reserved accommodation or any losses suffered due to late running of trains and other such unintended eventualities which are not wilful or deliberately perpetrated. 

RAC Ticket

Passenger can board the train with an RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket. Passenger will be provided with sitting accommodation initially and allotted a berth (In case of passengers not turning) in the train.

Waitlisted Ticket

Waitlisted ticket passengers are not permitted to board the reserved coaches if their ticket is not confirmed at the time of preparation of chart, since no berth/seat has been reserved for their use in these coaches. Such passengers, if found in the reserved coach unauthorisedly, are detrained at the next stoppage of train, if no vacant berth is available, (due to non turn up of passengers) to accommodate them. As per section 155 of Railway Act, if any passengers, enters a compartment wherein no berth/seat has been reserved for his use or unauthorisedly occupies a berth/seat reserved for the use of another passenger, refuses to leave, he/she shall be removed from the berth/seat/compartment and be punishable with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees.

No waitlisted Ticket, but wants to board a train in the Reserved coach, what should do?

If you don’t have any ticket, passenger may approach the Train Superintendent / TTE after purchasing an unreserved ticket from the booking office as specified in the following table. The TTE will allot the accommodation, subject to availability.

However, in case you have a second class ticket and could not get reservation in sleeper class and desire to travel in any upper class, passenger may approach the on-board ticket checking staff, who can upgrade your ticket accordingly subject to availability of accommodation except in Rajdhani/Shatabdi Express Trains.

How to Know Current Status of Unconfirmed ticket

Passenger can contact the Reservation Enquiry Counters at nearest Computerised Reservation Centre or call the Interactive Voice Response System. Passengers can dial ✅ “139” which is accessible from any where in the country without dialling any any STD code. After getting connected to “139”, the information with regard to arrival/departure of a train at a particular station can be obtained by dialling the train no. and STD code of that station.

The current status of the ticket, status of arrival / departure of train, availability of train accommodation, fare enquiry etc. can also be obtained by sending SMS to 139.

✅ Which are all the ID Proof to Carry for Train journey?

Any one of the passenger booked on the tickets issues from Computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) and internet (i and e ticket), undertaking journey in reserved classes, have to carry anyone of the prescribed proof of identity (in original) during the journey and produce the same as and when required failing which all passengers booked on that ticket will be treated as without ticket and charged accordingly.
