R-Wallet: Railway Wallet for Unreserved Tickets, Recharge and RailOne Migration

The R-Wallet, or Railway Wallet, is Indian Railways’ own prepaid wallet for buying unreserved journey tickets, season tickets and platform tickets. Its main attraction is a 3% discount on unreserved tickets paid from the wallet. This guide covers how it works, recharge limits, what happened to balances when the UTS app closed, how to surrender the wallet, and how it differs from the IRCTC e-Wallet, which is a completely separate product.

If you had money in a UTS R-Wallet: It has not been lost. When UTS was discontinued, CRIS confirmed that R-Wallet balances transfer to RailOne, provided you register on RailOne with the same mobile number you used on UTS. Because the balance is tied to that number and is non-transferable, registering with a different number will not bring it across.

What the R-Wallet Actually Is

The R-Wallet is a closed wallet operated by Indian Railways through CRIS, the Centre for Railway Information Systems. It belongs to the unreserved ticketing system, not to IRCTC.

Being a closed wallet means the Reserve Bank of India’s rules for that category apply: the balance can only be spent on railway ticketing, and it cannot be transferred to another person, another wallet or a bank account while the wallet is active.

It is created automatically with a zero balance when you register on the official app, at no cost and with no registration fee.

R-Wallet vs IRCTC e-Wallet: Not the Same Thing

These two are frequently confused, including by websites that treat the names as interchangeable. They are separate products serving different journeys.

Put simply, a daily commuter buying local or season tickets wants the R-Wallet. Someone booking a long-distance sleeper or AC journey wants the IRCTC e-Wallet, or simply UPI.

What You Can Buy With It

  • Unreserved journey tickets, including suburban and local travel.
  • Season tickets, new issues and renewals. See our season tickets guide.
  • Platform tickets.
  • Return tickets booked at the same time.

It does not cover reserved tickets, catering orders, or IRCTC tourism packages.

Recharge Limits

Maximum balanceRs 10,000

There is no requirement to keep a minimum balance. You simply need enough to cover the fare of the ticket you are buying.

How to Recharge

In the App

  1. Open the R-Wallet section in the official railway ticketing app.
  2. Choose Recharge Wallet.
  3. Enter the amount, in multiples of Rs 100.
  4. Pay by UPI, net banking, debit card or credit card.
  5. The balance is credited to your wallet.

At a Counter

You can also recharge at any UTS ticket counter by giving your registered mobile number. This is useful if you would rather pay cash or if you are having trouble with online payment.

The UTS to RailOne Change

For years the R-Wallet lived inside the UTS on Mobile app. Railways has since consolidated its apps, discontinuing UTS and making RailOne the official app for unreserved and suburban ticketing.

What that means for wallet holders:

  • Balances carry over to RailOne, provided you register with the same mobile number.
  • Existing UTS and IRCTC users can log in with their current credentials rather than registering afresh.
  • The 3% discount continues on unreserved tickets bought through RailOne with R-Wallet balance.
  • Payments are authenticated by biometric or mPIN.

If you have changed your mobile number: The R-Wallet balance is tied to the registered number and cannot be transferred to a new one. Your options are to spend the balance down by buying tickets, or to surrender the wallet at a counter and take the refund. Do not simply register afresh on a new number and expect the money to follow.

How to Surrender the Wallet

If you no longer want the wallet, you can close it and recover the balance:

  1. In the app, open Profile and select Surrender Wallet.
  2. Confirm the surrender. The app generates a code.
  3. Go to any UTS counter with your registered mobile number and that code.
  4. The balance is refunded to you, less a clerkage charge.

The clerkage deduction has been revised over time, so confirm the current amount at the counter before you decide. If your balance is small, spending it on tickets may work out better than surrendering it.

If you buy unreserved or season tickets regularly, the R-Wallet earns its place through the 3% saving alone. The one thing to get right is your RailOne registration, which must use the same mobile number as your old UTS account so the balance follows you across.
