Rail Wi-Fi Network – 15 Kashmir Valley Railway Stations Get Connection

Indian Railway announced via press release on 20.06.2021 that all 15 Kashmir Valley Railway Stations, including Srinagar, have now got integrated with 6021 Station Wi-Fi Network of Indian Railways.

Public Wi-Fi, provided under the brand name of RailWire, is available at 15 stations (Baramula, Hamre, Pattan, Mazhom, Budgam, Srinagar, Pampore, Kakapora, Avantipura, Panzgam, Bijbehara, Anantnag, Sadura, Qazigund, Banihal) of UT of Kashmir which are spread out in four District HQs – Srinagar, Budgaon, Banihal & Qazigund.

Wi-fi was already available at 15 stations in the Union Territory of Jammu -Kathua, Budhi, Chhan Arorian, Hira Nagar, Ghagwal, Samba, Vijaypur, Bari Brahman, Jammu Tawi, Bajalta, Sangar, Manwal, Ram Nagar.

RailTel was entrusted by the Ministry of Railways to provide public Wi-Fi at all the Railway stations. The vision was to convert the Railway platform into a platform for digital inclusion. Today, the Wi-Fi Network is spread over 6000+ Railway stations across the country and this is one of the largest integrated wi-fi network in the world.

In his message on this occasion, Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Commerce & Industries and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said, “Wi-Fi plays a significant role in connecting the people, and is bridging the digital divide between rural and urban India at a rapid pace. Indian Railways, in association with its RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, is playing a key role in bringing high-speed Wi-Fi to every corner of the country. Today, on World Wi-Fi Day, I am delighted to announce that Srinagar and 14 stations of the Kashmir Valley have become a part of one the largest integrated public Wi-Fi network in the world connecting 6000+ stations across the country. With this, all the stations of Valley now have public Wi-Fi. It is a crucial step for Digital India mission and will go a long way in connecting the unconnected. I convey my appreciation to the team Indian Railways and RailTel, which has worked tirelessly to achieve this remarkable feat.”

Northern Railways’ has decided to run four additional trains on the 137-kilometer Banihal- Baramulla rail line beginning April 1. With the additional trains, the total runs of the trains will become six; presently only one train operates daily from Baramulla to Banihal and vice versa. After remaining suspended for around 11 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian Railways, on Monday (22.02.2021), resumed ✅ train services in Kashmir Valley on the Banihal-Baramulla section. The 356 km railway track will start from Jammu and end at Baramulla.

According to the Railway Ministry, the resumption of train services in Kashmir Valley will enhance ease of movement and provide a big boost to the region’s tourism sector. All Indian Railways regular passenger train services were canceled on 25 March 2020 when the novel coronavirus lockdown was announced. Now, the national transporter has been increasing the number of train services in a graded manner.

Over 65 percent of trains are currently running. More than 250 trains were added in the month of January alone and more train services will be added to the Indian Railways network gradually, the official said.

Kashmir Valley Train Running Details

The first train would depart from Baramulla at 9.10 am while the second train will leave Banihal at 11.25 am. People have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel and maintain social distancing inside the trains.

Kashmir Valley Train Service History

In around two years, Indian Railways would link Kashmir to the rest of India. It is being said that the development work for the most challenging 111 km long section of Indian Railways’ Udhampur – Srinagar – Baramulla rail link (USBRL) project will be completed by December 2022 that would provide rail connectivity to Kashmir. The construction work on the 272 km long line is being undertaken by the Northern Railway zone at an estimated cost of Rs 28,000 crore.

Under this project, 118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section, 25 km Udhampur-Katra section, and 18 km Banihal-Qazigund section have been commissioned already. The 111 km Katra-Banihal section is the last remaining section. For execution purposes, the USBRL project has been divided into three sub-sections. The project’s most difficult stretch- Katra-Qazigund leg, along with its alignment which is of 129 km length, passes via Patni and Pir Panjal ranges.
