The timings are designed for a day trip. The gap between arrival and return departure gives you around two and a half to three hours in Agra or Jhansi, enough to see the Taj Mahal and return to Delhi the same evening. That is deliberate, since the train was built with tourism in mind.
Delhi to Agra in Under Two Hours
For most passengers, the Delhi to Agra leg is the point. The train covers that stretch in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes, which is faster than driving and considerably faster than any other train on the route.
It is why the Gatimaan features in so many Golden Triangle itineraries: leave Delhi after breakfast, see the Taj Mahal, and be back in Delhi for dinner.

Fares for the full Delhi to Jhansi run range from roughly ₹1,125 to ₹2,280 depending on class. The Delhi to Agra leg costs less. Catering is included in the fare.

History
The Gatimaan Express was flagged off on 5 April 2016 from Hazrat Nizamuddin, initially running only as far as Agra Cantt. It was India’s first train permitted to run at 160 km per hour, requiring track and signalling upgrades on the Delhi to Agra section.
In 2018 the service was extended beyond Agra to Gwalior and Jhansi, taking it to its present 403 km route.
It held the title of India’s fastest train until the arrival of Vande Bharat services, and remains among the fastest.
