What is Tatkal Ticket Booking?
Tatkal is a special emergency quota introduced by Indian Railways for passengers who need to book a ticket at short notice. The word “Tatkal” means “immediate” in Hindi
Under Tatkal, a certain number of berths on most trains are reserved and released just one day before the train departs. These seats are available at a higher fare than regular tickets.
Tatkal Booking Opening Time : AC vs Non-AC
This is the most important thing to know about Tatkal. The booking window opens at different times depending on the class:
| Train Class | Tatkal Booking Opens | Journey Date |
|---|---|---|
| AC Classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC) | 10:00 AM | Next day (D-1) |
| Non-AC Classes (SL, 2S) | 11:00 AM | Next day (D-1) |
Example: If your train departs on 28 June, Tatkal AC booking opens at 10:00 AM on 27 June. Tatkal Sleeper booking opens at 11:00 AM on 27 June.
Tatkal Charges : How Much Extra Do You Pay?
Tatkal charges are added on top of the regular base fare. These are not a flat fee – they are calculated as a percentage of the base fare, subject to minimum and maximum limits.
| Class | Tatkal Charge | Minimum (in Rs.) | Maximum (in Rs.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC First Class (1A) | 30% of base fare | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| AC 2-Tier (2A) | 30% of base fare | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| AC 3-Tier (3A) | 30% of base fare | ₹300 | ₹400 |
| AC Chair Car (CC) | 30% of base fare | ₹125 | ₹225 |
| Sleeper Class (SL) | 30% of base fare | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| Second Sitting (2S) | 10% of base fare | ₹10 | ₹15 |
Note: Tatkal charges are non-refundable on cancellation. Only the base fare portion is refunded after deducting applicable cancellation charges.

Tips to Book Tatkal Tickets Faster
Tatkal seats disappear within minutes – sometimes within seconds on popular routes. These steps can improve your speed significantly:
1. Log In Before the Window Opens
Log in to your IRCTC account at least 5 minutes before 10:00 AM (or 11:00 AM). Have the journey details already filled in and ready to submit.
2. Save Your ID and Passenger Details
Add all passengers to your IRCTC saved passenger list in advance. This avoids typing names and ID numbers at the last second when speed matters most.
3. Use a Saved Payment Method
Use a saved UPI ID, saved card, or IRCTC wallet balance. Avoid payment methods that require an OTP from your bank – that extra step can cost you the seat.
4. Use Master List Feature
IRCTC allows you to save a “Master List” of frequent travellers under your account. Use this to auto-fill passenger details in one click during Tatkal booking.
5. Avoid Using Agents
From July 2025, authorized agents cannot book Tatkal during the first 30 minutes after opening. So booking directly on IRCTC during those first 30 minutes gives you the best chance without agent competition.
6. Have Your Aadhaar OTP Ready
Since Aadhaar OTP is now mandatory for Tatkal, make sure your Aadhaar is linked to your active mobile number. A delayed OTP can cause booking failure even if seats are available.
What is Premium Tatkal?
Premium Tatkal is a dynamic pricing version of Tatkal where the fare increases automatically as more seats get booked. It works like airline dynamic pricing.
Key differences from regular Tatkal:
- Fares can go significantly higher than regular Tatkal as seats fill up
- No refund at all – not even for train cancellations in some cases (always check the booking terms at time of purchase)
- Available on select trains and routes only
- Booking window is the same as regular Tatkal (D-1)
