What Happens If You Miss Your Train? (Your Options Explained)

What Happens If You Miss Your Train?

You ran to the platform. The train was already moving. Or maybe traffic held you up and by the time you reached the station, the train was gone.

It is a horrible feeling. But before you panic — here is what you need to know and what you can still do.

✅ Short Answer: A missed train ticket has some value, but only if you act fast. You may get a partial refund by filing a TDR, or you can board the same train from the next station if it has not left yet. Read on for all your options.

Table of Contents:

Option 1 : Board the Train at the Next Station

This is the first thing to check. If the train has just left your station, it will stop at the next station in some time. Depending on how far that station is, you may be able to reach there by auto, cab, or bus and board the same train.

Here is what you need to do:

  • Check the train’s schedule on the NTES app to find the next station and its arrival time.
  • Estimate if you can physically reach the next station before the train arrives there.
  • If yes – go. Your ticket is valid for boarding at any station on the route, not just the one you booked from.
  • Once on board, find the TTE and explain the situation. Show your original ticket.

Example: Your train was at Delhi and left at 6:00 AM. The next stop is Ghaziabad at 6:40 AM. If you can reach Ghaziabad by 6:35 AM, you can board there. Your ticket is still valid.

There is no penalty for boarding at the next station on your route. The TTE cannot charge you extra just because you missed the original station. However, you travel only for the remaining distance from where you boarded.

Option 2 : File a TDR for Partial Refund

If you cannot catch the train at the next station either, your best move is to file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt). This is a formal request to Indian Railways for a refund on an unused ticket.

For Tickets Booked Online (IRCTC)

Log in to your IRCTC account. Go to My Transactions → Booked Ticket History. Find the PNR and click on File TDR. Select the reason – in this case, “Passenger Not Travelled.”

The TDR must be filed within a specific time limit from the scheduled departure of the train:

Ticket TypeTDR Filing DeadlineRefund Amount
Confirmed ticket (missed train)Within 3 hours of departurePartial – fare minus cancellation charges
RAC ticket (missed train)Within 3 hours of departurePartial refund after deductions
Waiting list ticket (unconfirmed)Auto-cancelled at chart – no TDR neededAuto refund minus clerkage

Time Matters: The 3-hour window starts from the actual scheduled departure time, not when you reached the station. Do not delay filing the TDR – once the window closes, no refund is possible.

For Tickets Booked at Counter

Go to the reservation or refund counter at any railway station. Carry your ticket. Ask to file a TDR and give the reason as “Passenger Not Travelled.” The counter staff will process it and give you a TDR receipt. Keep that receipt – you will need it to follow up on the refund later.

How Much Refund Will You Get?

The refund for a missed train is not the full ticket amount. Indian Railways deducts cancellation charges based on how close to departure you are filing. Since you are filing after the train has already departed, the deduction is on the higher side.

Here is a general idea of what to expect:

  • For most confirmed tickets filed within 3 hours of departure – you lose 50% of the basic fare or the flat cancellation charge (whichever is higher), plus the Reservation Charge and Superfast Charge if applicable.
  • The exact amount depends on your class of travel and the base fare.
  • Tatkal tickets — no refund at all for confirmed tickets, even on TDR.

Option 3 : Book a Fresh Ticket the Same Day

If you need to travel on the same day and do not want to wait for a TDR refund to come through, check these options at the station:

Check Tatkal Availability

If it is before 12 noon and there are other trains on the same route, Tatkal for those trains may still be open. Check IRCTC or ask at the reservation counter.

Try Current Booking (CRB)

For trains departing in the next few hours, Current Booking opens 4 hours before departure. You can sometimes get a confirmed berth under this quota even when Tatkal is sold out.

Try Platform Ticket + Unreserved Coach

If you just need to get somewhere urgently and the train has an unreserved (General) coach, you can buy an unreserved ticket at the counter and travel in that coach. No berth, but you will reach your destination.

A Few Things People Often Get Wrong

Your Ticket Is Not Automatically Cancelled When You Miss the Train

Many passengers assume the railway cancels the ticket the moment they do not board. That is not true. The ticket remains active. You must cancel it yourself or file a TDR to get any refund. If you do nothing, the ticket simply becomes worthless with zero refund.

You Cannot Board the Train Mid – Route Without a Valid Ticket for That Segment

If you board at a later station and your original ticket shows the earlier station as the origin, you are technically travelling from a station not mentioned on the ticket. The TTE can ask you to pay for that extra distance or may fine you. The safest approach is to talk to the TTE honestly and explain the situation. Most TTEs handle these cases practically.

Missing a Train Due to Late Arrival of a Connecting Train

If you missed your train because another Indian Railways train you were travelling on arrived late, you are entitled to a full refund. This is a specific rule and needs to be mentioned clearly when filing the TDR. Collect a certificate of delay from the TTE of the late train if possible — it strengthens your refund claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

✅ Can I use the same ticket to travel on the next train?

No. A train ticket is valid only for the specific train number and date mentioned on it. If you missed the train, you cannot use that ticket on a different train. You need to book a fresh ticket.

✅ What if my ticket is confirmed but I just did not want to travel?

That is a voluntary no-show. The same TDR rules apply, but you must file within 3 hours of departure to get any refund. After 3 hours, no refund is given for confirmed tickets not travelled.

✅ I filed TDR – how long does the refund take?

TDR refunds typically take 60 to 90 days to process. Indian Railways reviews each TDR claim manually. Once approved, the refund goes back to your original payment source for IRCTC bookings.

✅ Can I file a TDR on behalf of someone else who missed the train?

Yes, if the ticket was booked on your IRCTC account, you can file the TDR from that account even if the passenger is the one who missed the train.

✅ What if there is no next station nearby I can reach?

Then file a TDR immediately from your phone on the IRCTC app. Do not wait to reach home or a counter. The 3-hour clock is running from the scheduled departure time.

✅ Does missing a Tatkal train give any refund?

No. Confirmed Tatkal tickets have no refund even under normal cancellation — and the same applies if you miss the train. However, if the train itself was cancelled by Railways, you get a full refund including the Tatkal charges.
