Change Your Train Ticket Date: Postponement and Preponement Rules
Plans change after booking more often than we would like. Indian Railways allows you to postpone a journey to a later train, or prepone it to an earlier one, on the same ticket rather than cancelling and rebooking. This guide explains who can do it, the charges at each stage, the conditions, and the one big limitation that catches most travellers out.
The limitation to know first: Postponement and preponement are handled at a reservation counter, where you surrender the original ticket during working hours. The Basic Conditions
Whether moving your journey later or earlier, these apply throughout:
- The destination must stay the same. You cannot use this to change where you are going.
- Accommodation must be available on the new train, whether confirmed, RAC or waitlisted.
- You may travel in the same or a higher class.
- The change is allowed only once per ticket.
- Any difference in fare between the original and new journey is refunded to you or recovered from you.
- It does not apply against the Tatkal quota, even if you offer to pay Tatkal charges.

You can move to any subsequent train on the same day or a later day, for the same destination.
On a Confirmed Ticket
What you pay depends on how early you surrender the ticket. The earlier you act, the cheaper it is.

That final window after departure follows the same time limits as refund rules, which run to 3, 6 or 12 hours depending on the distance of your journey.
On an RAC or Waitlisted Ticket
The terms are easier here. Postponement is allowed to any subsequent train on the same or a later day, for the same destination, provided accommodation is available and you surrender the ticket within the permitted window after the original train departed. You pay only a clerkage charge, not a percentage of the fare.
Preponement: Moving to an Earlier Train
You can move to an earlier train on the same day or an earlier day, again for the same destination. This works for confirmed, RAC and waitlisted tickets alike.
The condition here is about timing relative to the new train rather than the old one. Surrender the ticket during reservation office working hours and at least 6 hours before the new train departs, or before its reservation chart is prepared, whichever comes later.

If You Later Cancel the Changed Ticket
This is worth understanding before you decide, because cancelling after a change costs more than cancelling once.
You pay two sets of charges: what would have been due had you cancelled the original ticket at the moment you changed it, plus the charges due on the new reservation, treated as a fresh booking.
The one relief is that if you already paid a 25% or 50% cancellation charge at the time of the change, that is not charged again. Only the second set applies.
Worth working out first: If your plans are still uncertain, compare the cost of changing the date now against simply cancelling and rebooking later. Changing and then cancelling is usually the most expensive route of all.
How to Do It
- Go to a reservation counter during working hours, well before your original train departs.
- Carry the original ticket and a valid photo ID.
- Tell the clerk the new train and date you want, keeping the same destination.
- The clerk checks availability, surrenders the old ticket and issues the new one.
- Pay the applicable reservation fee, clerkage or cancellation charge, plus any fare difference.

Reserved Accommodation for Ladies
A separate reservation rule worth knowing: one compartment of the lowest class is earmarked for women on every passenger-carrying train, and some berths in Sleeper and seats in Second Class are also reserved for women at the originating station.
